My activity since 26 1 31 c.f. pics from 16 1 9...2026 2 6

Imagine being able to borrow these two pics from a blog I wrote on another site in 2016 but almost a month earlier...

The thing this year is that it's the first winter since 2021 I can recall being able to walk on the frozen sea and exceptionally I have been the only visitor to our changing room to keep the AVANTO that's Finnish for "hole in the ice" open, by daily hacking the over-night build up of ice away, and these last 2 days making sure to throw as much of it away onto the surrounding ice, in order that it doesn't become joined to the fresh over-night ice build up.

Back in 2016 I have to think there were many others one could rely on to perform this task because I'm thinking today the average age of the daily visitors is much older than then, as the population of the town has got older..?

That's leaving aside the weekend visitors but not so many to brave the deep freeze conditions as I do because as a permanent inhabitant who has been visiting the chnging room since 2009 when I retired, visiting everyday is necessary to be able to keep visiting in deep freeze conditions as of this past week.

Today when I inspected the overall ice thickness I'd put it approaching 10 inches or 24 cm so without daily hacking it wouldn't now be possible to visit.

One reason for this situation is the water level in the sea has been exceptionally low compared to its usual height: the height of the Baltic Sea not subject to tides ebbing and flowing but more to do with wind directions.

When our pump sits frozen half encased in ice half above the water line with no sure remedy to shut the place down effectively with a message to that effect on the doors.

But happily for this particular camper without locking the doors so that we are unable to gain access, as happened during the worst days of Covid 19 back in 2021!
Omitting that age old expression: “Old age when it comes doesn’t come empty handed." hahaha!

Ten years on I don't have time for such expressions: pushing the top of my game as I like to think of myself, as I hope some of my readers get to thinking likewise..? Have a good day everyone wherever this blog finds you... and a good continuation... sitting here after 7 days straight of visiting our avanto and 7 days straight of hacking its ice away for yet another dip - 13 degC with a biting wind, but the endorphins still keeping me upbeat!
