After my walk with D… 16 10 9 (9) 25 1 23

So on the day D and I left the hills to drive the hour long journey along Loch Arkaig back to civilisation in our separate cars my following his now the flesh on my right hand thumb began to swell whence I know not why..? At first my attention was drawn to it by an itch which prompted me to rub it and then I noticed how the swelling was spreading to the flesh between my first and second fingers as I wracked my brains as to what could have produced such a violent reaction..?

Of course there had been much activity at our bothy before leaving: the arrangements for one's toilet for example was to take the spade by the door and in my case visit the nearby forest which began 20 yards or some 20 metres distance from the doorway in my dry shirt sleeves attempting forlornly to dodge the rain falling quite heavily, dig a hole in the ground by removing the turf to one side and then refill it with the completion of the proceedings... Perhaps I had grazed my right hand on an infected branch of a tree: whatever the event I had to change my shirt for dryer clothing upon my return and so in retrospect one can imagine a certain amount of stress to be associated with these proceedings, but at no point can I recall any insect being involved in the swelling... Maybe hauling our gear up to the road above the bothy through long grasses was another possible opportunity to get bitten by some predator but again I have no recollection of such an occurrence.

Returning to civilisation D drove to our guest house carpark and I followed to inform him I should continue the 12 miles to Fort William to visit the Belford hospital to see what they made of my swollen thumb. He followed me there when the nursing staff checked my blood glucose level normal at 6,8 and then with the input from a consulted doctor I was prescribed a 7-day course of 500mg capsules 4x a day of the antibiotic Flucloxacillin and told that if a red line of infection were to travel up my arm in the next 24 hours I should return to the hospital to show them, that I should be sure to complete the 7 day course and be advised not to take too much alcohol...

So our celebrations for my part were somewhat restrained as we began dinner with seared West Coast Scallops for me and Salmon for D washed down with water and Beer respectively, followed in my case by Rump of Lamb and a glass of red wine completing the meal with the Cheeses shown in an earlier blog…

D left early next morning leaving me to enjoy a sumptuous breakfast and to take some pics of our suite of rooms before travelling into FW once again to visit the shops and invest in a pair of boots finally that D had said the day before his friend Kevin was most satisfied with. Later I would jettison one of the pairs I had been wearing having decided I should walk the next hill in dry feet. Hahaha

My next port of call I decided would be a return visit to Newtonmore to stay at the hostel on its High Street for some relaxing days this Sunday afternoon of 16 9 25 and with a weather forecast predicting the best day of the week would be Tuesday 16 9 27 decided that would be my last walking day of my present trip..?

Happily then in late afternoon I headed North East for Newtonmore and was gratified to see the swelling of my right hand was already subsiding… Have a good day everyone.
