Older old age? 25 2 12
...is simply that that you got there you arrived
and not necessarily all in one piece!
No, old age one has to say doesn't have a lot to
recommend it unless one has boundless energy, enterprise and a comfortable
disposition financially it has to be said, which is not to say I am complaining
for as we have said before in these blogs retaining focus is very important
which is what I claim keeps me on the right track...
No, at the start of the festive season we got an
invitation to go next door for a glogg a Scandinavian beverage
drank at this time of year generally of red wine heated to which are
added raisins and almond nuts and maybe a stick of cinnamon. The
conversation quickly turned to retirement which is the condition of both my
wife and myself whilst he and his wife are on the threshold of retirement both
practicing architects for the time being. And she told how she aims to write a
book about windmills here in these northern countries surprising me at least
with some numbers which suggested there were once upon a time far more
windmills here than in Holland for example. A very interesting project then!
Well i retired on the Friday I reached retiring age
to be kicked out like all my contemporaries only exceptionally I got to return
the following Monday to begin a new job as Consultant for a couple of projects
no-one else was really suited to handle. Suffice to say I had lots of energy
then and in the group I represented my company in a manner of speaking I was
commissioned to write a book about it.
But with the passing years nowadays I content
myself writing this blog walking round the town doing the shopping with my
little rucksack on my back and going for my daily swim in the sea, chatting
with acquaintances I meet along the way some neutral ones others ex-colleagues
from the company I worked for for the last 20 years of my working life. Maybe
taking a few pics along the way of anything that takes my fancy.
With a diminishing friendship base it has to be
said also which is the major rub for me of the whole undertaking: people dying
by the wayside others too weary to keep a friendship going will help you
younger people get my message. When I content myself by thanking my lucky stars
for still enjoying sound health a good pension and the company of my wife and
the two families spawned by our two sons each with their wives and two children
one with daughters the other with sons.
Another great thing about retirement is that one
gets to reflect on the life one has lead in a way which is just not possible
for those with still a long way to go before reaching old age because they
neither have the time for such leisurely reflection as a rule nor the
experiences to reflect upon, at least not to the same extent. As one descends
into oblivion of one form or another it also has to be said but for a good many
of these days in retirement with most of one’s faculties still intact which in
this day and age is quite well provided for with all the dietary supplements
and medications otherwise available for treating all the ailments of old age.
Lastly in this short blog it is perhaps worth
saying too that contenting one’s self with the company of people who are also
retired or growing old would also be a virtue for the aged but perhaps I have
not quite arrived myself just the noo because I do so like the company of
younger people, and well let’s just leave it there for now!! Have a good day
everyone as I hope you too are contented with your lot for the present age in
which you reside..?
Pics today of the sun rise and sun set a few days ago as the days begin to lengthen once again...
The great thing about old age..? 15 12 30 (12 hits)
Footnote: I wrote this blog as you can see 10 years ago later this year and am now re-publishing it since yesterday it took its latest hit...still pegging on as the Lancashire Mill-worker's expression would have it: which to say still doing today what i was doing then only now my old blogs strike a new chord which prompts me to re-post them expressing a side to my nature i can still appreciate in maybe a slightly different light?
